Carols by Candlelight a singing sensation

Persistent rain may have prevented the full program from being performed, but it failed to dampen the Christmas spirit which was embraced by over 1000 Clarence Valley residents at the Grafton Midday Rotary Carols by Candlelight concert in Market Square on December 3.

As the Clarence Valley Orchestra and Chorus skilfully played popular Christmas carols including The First Noel and Deck the Halls under the guidance of conductor Greg Butcher, songbird Lisa White and baritone Troy Castle delighted the crowd with their exquisite voices as families set up picnic rugs and deck chairs across the grass and sang along with the performers.

Members of the Clarence River Dance Academy also entertained the crowd during the concert.

“It was a magnificent event,” said compere Des Harvey OAM.

“Everyone had a good time, and the Clarence Valley is very lucky to have performers like Lisa and Troy, who sang beautifully.

“Unfortunately, we did have to end the evening earlier than planned due to the rain, but we got through about 90 percent of the program.

“It was a very good night.”

After successfully navigating a safe passage to Grafton, special guest Santa Claus told Mr Harvey he was very happy to be back in the Clarence Valley, and said everyone in the North Pole has been “busy making toys” as Christmas approaches.

He also asked that children “please leave his reindeer some carrots” on December 24, adding he “loves Christmas cake and a glass of milk.”

Lachlan Foster received an early Christmas present when his raffle ticket won him a $1000 barbecue donated by Harvey Norman Grafton.

Peter and Chris Lynch from local business Lynch Constructions also generously donated $200 of barbeque accessories to the lucky winner.

Mr Harvey said Grafton Midday Rotary is looking forward to hosting Carols by Candlelight again in 2023.
